Host & gather
Gathering doesn't have to be a production
The best evenings usually start with something simple on the table.
- Start with one board. Bread, a small bowl of olive oil, a drizzle of balsamic, and something sweet. Set it out before anyone arrives.
- Pick one recipe, not five. Choose one page from your journal and let the rest be store bought. No one remembers the side dishes.
- Light a candle and dim the lights. It tells everyone they're welcome to stay a while.
- Let guests help. Hand someone the bottle and let them pour. People relax when they have something to do.
- Keep it on the calendar. A standing Sunday supper or a monthly dinner with friends is easier to keep than a big party once a year.
Journaling tips
A book meant to be lived in
- There is no right way to fill these pages. Write one line or a whole page. Start anywhere.
- Add the date to every entry. Years from now, it's the detail you'll be glad you kept.
- Write down who was at the table, not just what you made.
- Keep it on the kitchen counter, not on a shelf. A little splatter means it's being used.
- Tape in a photo, a place card, or a note from a guest.
- Ask the cook in your family to write their recipe in their own handwriting on the family recipe pages.
Document the journey
Pages worth passing down
This journal is meant to be handed to someone one day. A few ways to make it a keepsake.
- Note the "firsts": the first holiday you hosted, the first meal in a new home, the first time a child helped in the kitchen.
- When you change a recipe, write down why. The story behind the change is part of the recipe.
- Save a page each year for a short note: who gathered, what you served, what you want to remember.
- Write the name of the person you'll pass it to on the page saved for them at the front of the book.
About us
From our table to yours
The Outward Olive began in 2020 at a farmers market table, after our daughter wished our family could work together. In 2022 we opened our tasting room at 794 N Main Street in Crown Point, where we bottle our extra virgin olive oils and balsamic vinegars by hand.
Moments at the Table was written by Kristina DeRolf, our founder.
